A thorough understanding of San Jiao energetics is fundamental to the successful
diagnosis and treatment of many forms of illness, particularly those of a complex, difficult,
internal nature. Yet the workings of the San Jiao is presently one of the most obscure and
poorly explained concepts in all of Chinese medicine. One of the reasons for this has been the
lack of unambiguous translations of ancient Chinese medical literature into the English language.
This ambiguity has left us with murky descriptions of how the San Jiao functions, a situation
that has fortuitously changed in recent years with the availability of Nguyen van Nghi’s
translation of the Huangdi Neijing Ling Shu in French and English, providing us for the first
time, with a completely clear, accessible and clinically relevant understanding of San Jiao
energetics.
Dr. Edward Garbacz has been a student of Dr. Van Nghi’s and of Van Nghi’s long time
associate Dr. Tran Viet Dzung since 1997. He has translated Van Nghi’s French translation of the Ling Shu into a three volume (1500 page) English text. In addition, he has applied this knowledge to his own clinical practice of holistically-oriented internal medicine over the course of many years. Dr. Garbacz is in a unique position to clarify the dynamics of the mysterious San Jiao for us, in a way that will bring us to a deeper understanding of the diagnostic and therapeutic tools of Chinese medicine, from the classics, as the ancient masters understood them. They will be presented here in a format that will allow us to apply them directly to our clinical analyses and therapeutic practices. The information will be applicable not only to acupuncture, but to any of the various branches of Chinese medicine: herbal medicine, tuina, and oriental dietary therapy.
The central theme of this seminar will be the function of the essential driving force that
plays a pivotal role in creating and maintaining the entire energetic system described in the great
classical work of Chinese medicine, the Huangdi Neijing Ling Shu, namely, the San Jiao. The
first day of the seminar will focus on providing us with an understanding of the organization of
the San Jiao into three energetic fields. Dr. Garbacz will elucidate the interrelationships among the various zang fu in the workings of the San Jiao with regard to their roles in the multistep
process involved in the formation, activation and circulation of the various forms of qi (wei qi,
ying qi, as well as anatomical, sensorial and mentational jing), xue (blood), and jin ye (organic
liquids), including the “irrigation of liquids pathways” (water metabolism). The various
connections between the San Jiao,and the primary and secondary channels that carry the wei,
ying, and jing will also be explained.
On the second day of the seminar clinical applications of San Jiao energetics will be
considered. These will include descriptions of the energetic connections of acupuncture points to
the San Jiao, a general method for evaluating energetic imbalances , and the formulation of
appropriate treatment strategies for various pathologies via an understanding of San Jiao
dynamics. For this day, participants are encouraged to bring cases from their own practices that
could be discussed in light of San Jiao energetics and therapeutics.
